OKLAHOMA CITY -- A report on falling debris at the Oklahoma Capitol reveals a problem with deteriorating mortar that is worse than expected.

The Department of Central Services on Wednesday released details from a forensic engineering firm that determined the falling debris at the southwest and southeast corners of the building is resulting from deteriorated mortar between limestone panels.

The report by Zahl-Ford Structural Investigations & Consultants shows it is likely metal clips that hold the limestone panels in place also have corroded because of water infiltration.

Orange barrier fencing already erected on the south side of the building is being expanded to keep pedestrians away from the area, and DCS officials say they will remain in place until repairs are finished.

Construction on the building was completed in 1917.
