EDMOND, Oklahoma – OU Medical Center Edmond is celebrating the first baby born in an Edmond hospital since 2005.

Officials say April Springer delivered a baby girl named Faith, at approximately 5:25 p.m. Monday.

According to the hospital, Edmond has been without a labor and delivery facility since Renaissance Women's Center closed in 2005. About 1,700 women in Edmond are pregnant every year, and have had to travel outside of Edmond for maternity care.

Monday was also the first day the new My Birth Center at the hospital has been open. Currently, there are four other patients in addition to Springer.

Officials say the return of labor and delivery services was the main priority for OU Medical Center when it merged with Edmond Medical Center in April, 2010.
