WEWOKA, Oklahoma – The City of Wewoka has notified its residents that high levels of lead have been found in the drinking water.

In a letter dated September 13, 2011, the city advised that testing had detected higher than normal levels of lead. The letter does not reveal what may have caused the elevated levels. It does recommend people take the following precautions to reduce exposure to lead in drinking water:

  • Before using water to prepare food or drinks, let the water run from the cold water tap until it gets as cold as possible.
  • Do not use water from the hot water tap to prepare food or drinks. Use the cold water tap and then heat the water.
  • Refrain from boiling the water because this will result in higher concentrations of lead.
  • Consider using a home treatment device that has been approved by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to remove lead from drinking water.
