OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Cleveland County Sheriff's Office with the help from the community is fighting hunger in Oklahoma.

Cleveland County deputies collected an estimated 600 pounds of food Saturday during a food drive at the Homeland located at 10700 S. Pennsylvania Ave. in Oklahoma City.

All items collected will be delivered to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma. The agency will distribute the goods to families in need.

Sheriff Lester thanked Homeland and everyone who turned out to donate food.

"I want to thank each person who dropped off food on Saturday," Lester said. "This will help feed hungry families who may not otherwise have any food to put on their table."

The Regional Food Bank provides food for people in 53 counties in western and central Oklahoma. About 14 percent of those in the service area live in poverty, according to figures provided by the agency.

The organization reported one in every five children is at risk of going hungry in the state. The Regional Food Bank's Food for Kids program reaches 43 of the 48 schools in Cleveland County. It feeds 1,127 children each week but could serve another 99.

CCSO will host another food collection Saturday, Oct. 1 at Crest Foods in Moore.
