Neighbors noticed some suspicious activity at 56-year-old Paula Martin's house around 7:45 p.m. Tuesday, September 6. They called police and reported seeing a man in Martin's car, which was parked in the driveway of her home at 524 S.W. 48th Street. Police say the man got out of the car and entered Martin's home.

When police arrived, they knocked on Martin's door but no one answered. When they could not get a response from anyone inside, patrol officers secured the house from the outside while they waited for backup.

Around 10 p.m., a tactical unit entered the house. As they searched the home, 20-year-old Dartangan Cotton fell through the ceiling. Officers arrested him and continued searching the house. They found Martin, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

After interviewing Cotton at police headquarters, officers arrested him on one complaint of first-degree murder.
