NORMAN, Oklahoma – Even a team with a Heisman-caliber quarterback is just one injury away from having to adapt.

Quarterback Landry Jones knows that all too well. When Sam Bradford went down in the first game of the season two years ago, Jones was thrown into the fire on the national stage.

So the Sooners aren't taking anything for granted with their newest Heisman-caliber quarterback.

Landry Jones' backups, Drew Allen and Blake Bell, both pass the eye test, standing 6-5 and 6-6 and weighing in at about 240 apiece. But more importantly, both are performing well in practice.

Allen is a redshirt sophomore who brings experience to the table, and said his time watching and learning so far has been beneficial.

"Each year under my belt just adds to the confidence and the preparation and understanding of the offense," he said.

Bell was a big time recruit and one of the top quarterbacks in the country coming out of high school before last season.

He said he thinks he can be OU's quarterback of the future.

"When we get the shot, me and Drew are both going to go out there and give it our best shots," Bell said.

The Sooners open the season on Sept. 3 against Tulsa.
