NORMAN, Oklahoma – Norman Public Schools may be getting a later start than most metro districts this year, but officials want their students to be safe just the same. Police across Norman made their presence known.

The lights are flashing, and the cops are watching. But speeding is only part of the problem. There's also congestion.

"This street is congested on both sides, and this is an elementary school, because on the first day of school so many parents are picking up their children," said Capt. Glen Dobry of the Norman Police Department.

Some moms had to park a long way off to pick up their kids.

"It's kind of hectic but the first day usually is pretty hectic," said Heather Jones, a parent.

Police issued around thirty tickets or warnings including driving without a seatbelt.

Officer Rick Monson of the Norman Police Department said, "Driving through a school zone it's kind of important to show the kids how important it is to be wearing a seat belt."

No major traffic-related problems were reported on the first day of school.
