Redhawks Shutout By Iowa 4-0

Posted: Updated:

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Oklahoma City Redhakws were held to only four hits on the night and committed three errors on the way to their 4-0 loss to the Iowa Cubs Monday.

The Cubs opened the scoring in the first inning. Brett Jackson led off with a double and eventually advanced around to third on a groundout. Scott Moore managed a single to score Jackson and take an early 1-0 lead.

The Redhawks tried to answer in the third. J.R. Towles led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice. Then, with two out, Anderson Hernandez singled into right field, but Towles was thrown out at home by Matt Spencer for the final out of the inning. Towles argued the call with home plate umpire Steve Barga and was ejected from the game.

Hernandez' single extended his hitting streak to 20 games and he is batting .414 (36x87) in the 20-game streak, the longest for Oklahoma City in 2011.

Iowa added three more runs in the eighth to cap off the game. Lou Montanez started the inning off with a triple and then scored when Jackson knocked a single. Marwin Gonzalez later reached the bases on a fielder's choice, and Jackson and Gonzalez later stole third and second with two out. Wellington Castillo next hit a groundball deep at shortstop, but Hernandez's throw went wild for an error and scored two runs for a 4-0 Iowa lead.

RedHawks starter Lucas Harrell (4-2) suffered the loss, giving up only a first inning run and four hits over seven innings with two walks and four strikeouts.

Austin Bibens-Dirkx (4-5) allowed four hits over seven shutout frames, with one walk and four strikeouts in a winning decision for the Cubs.

Oklahoma City will face the Cubs again Monday afternoon at 12:05 p.m.
