OKLAHOMA CITY -- Firefighters, residents and city leaders celebrated the renovation and reopening of Fire Station #7 Thursday in Capitol Hill.

Fire station E7 was built in 1982, but by 2008 its condition had deteriorated. Firefighters brought their concerns to the chief. The Fire Department Administration decided to temporarily close the station and firefighters moved out in July 2008.

Over the next few years, the City Council approved funds to remodel the station, and architectural plans were drawn up. Construction began in 2010. The work was paid for with $1.7 million from the Public Safety Capital Tax.

The fire station reopened Thursday in the 200 block of S.W. 23rd Street. It now has state-of-the-art equipment, including an advanced alerting system designed to reduce firefighters' response time. There's also a decontamination area, a built-in sprinkler system, and a room dedicated to emergency medical service (EMS) gear.

The fire department is particularly proud of the new sleeping quarters, which include private storage for firefighters on all three shifts.

"The Fire Department has a long history of service in the Capitol Hill community," said Chief Keith Bryant said. "We are excited to continue that service through this newly renovated, state of the art facility. The technology and features along with two of our newer fire trucks will enhance the quality of emergency services for residents living in the Capitol Hill area."
