NORMAN, Oklahoma – A drug-sniffing dog with the Cleveland County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) now has something extra to protect him while he's taking a bite out of crime.

Batu is a 3-year-old German Shepherd that began working as a K-9 with CCSO two years ago.  He detects illegal substances and helps protect his partner.

On Sunday, Batu became the first dog assigned to CCSO to receive a bullet-resistant vest.

Knights of Columbus Council 9901 from St. Andrew Catholic Church in Moore bought the ballistic vest for Batu. The group read about the vest in a publication, and raised the $750 to pay for it.

The group presented the vest to Batu and his handler, Deputy Travis Shroyer, on Sunday. Cleveland County Sheriff Joe Lester says it's a generous gift that could help save the K-9's life.

"I appreciate the Knights of Columbus and their gift to our office. This vest will protect Batu the next time he's needed to do his job."

The group is considering ordering another vest to donate to CCSO.
