OKEMAH, Oklahoma – A possible explosive device was removed from a gas line near Okemah Wednesday afternoon and rendered harmless by bomb technicians, the FBI said.

James E. Finch, special agent in charge of the FBI in Oklahoma City said the Okfuskee County Sheriff's Office notified the FBI at about 11 a.m. that it had located a possible improvised explosive device attached to a gas line approximately five miles south of Okemah.  The device was described as a pipe bomb with a timing mechanism attached to it.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol Bomb Technicians along with Special Agent Bomb Technicians from the FBI responded to the area. The device was removed from the gas line and placed in a remote area for further examination.

The device was rendered safe and the area was checked for additional devices. No other devices were found.

Anyone with information regarding the IED is urged to contact the Oklahoma City Division of the FBI at (405) 290-7770 (24 hour number).  Callers may remain anonymous.
