NORMAN, Oklahoma – The Cleveland County Sheriff's Office will kick off its annual "Operation Back to School Safely"on August 11 to remind drivers to be aware of school zones, in an effort to keep children safe on the road during the new school year.

According to the Sheriff's Office, during the operation, deputies will patrol in and around school zones to make sure drivers are obeying the traffic laws.

"Operation Back to School Safely" was initiated by Sheriff Joe Lester, after he was elected to office. Lester urges drivers to be careful when approaching school zones.

"Please pay attention to the speed limit when you enter a school zone," Lester said. "If one of our deputies catches you speeding or driving in a reckless manner, expect a traffic stop and a citation. The Cleveland County Sheriff's Office doesn't tolerate behavior that puts children at risk for injury."

Students return to the classroom at Little Axe Public Schools and Lexington Public Schools on Aug. 11. A week later, school begins at Moore Public Schools, Noble Public Schools and Robin Hill Public School. Classes start Aug. 24 at Norman Public Schools.
