NORMAN, Oklahoma -- The Cleveland County Sheriff's Office screened hundreds of drivers Friday night in a quest to find impaired drivers.

The checkpoint began about 10 p.m. on North Flood Avenue just north of 24th Avenue NW. It ended around 3 a.m. Saturday.

During the five-hour time span, 1,528 vehicles traveled through the checkpoint and 232 were screened.

Deputies arrested 20 people on various complaints.

Here is a breakdown of the arrests:

• Five for driving under the influence

• One for possession of marijuana

• 14 other arrests including driving under suspension, no driver's license and public drunkenness.

The checkpoints help deputies find those who are driving under the influence and ensure public safety at the same time.

"Drunk driving will not be tolerated in Cleveland County," said Cleveland County Sheriff Joe Lester. "Each person who drives under the influence puts themselves and other innocent people in a dangerous situation. Drunk driving can lead to traffic accidents that cause serious injury and take lives. Nobody should have to deal with the ramifications of another person's inconsiderate actions to drive drunk."
