UPDATE: OKLAHOMA CITY -- The United States Postal Services is strapped for cash and considering closing more than one in 10 post office branches, including dozens in Oklahoma.

One hundred USPS retail outlets in Oklahoma are on the chopping block, including the MLK branch in Oklahoma City.

The agency says that a second community meeting will be held to discuss the future of the MLK Post Office. This meeting is scheduled to take place at 7 p.m. on August 4 in the Fellowship Hall of Fairview Baptist Church, located on 1700 N.E. 7 St.

The public is invited to come to the meeting and express their views on the issue. If the agency decide to close the MLK branch, postal customers will be directed to the Eastside Post Office, located on 701 N. Kelley Ave.

The agency will spend Tuesday taking a closer look at 3,600 local offices, branches and stations for possible closing.

In 2010, the post office lost $8 billion. It operates more than 31,000 retail outlets, but business has dropped sharply in recent years because of e-mail and the Internet. There's also been a decline in advertising mail.

Most of the offices being considered for closure are in rural areas, but there are also several outlets in businesses, town halls and community centers that may be shut down.
