OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma City Public Schools begins its first year of a continuous learning calendar Monday, August 1, and the district is preparing for a scorching start to the school year.
The temperature is forecast to hit at least 100 degrees August 1; just the latest in a string of days in which temperatures in Oklahoma City have hit the century mark. Oklahoma City Public Schools (OKCPS) is trying to make sure students stay cool so they can focus on their studies and not the heat.
OKCPS has a projected enrollment of almost 37,600 students this year. District spokesperson Tierney Cook-Tinnin says all schools in the district have air conditioning, but about 144 classrooms out of the district's 2,500 are experiencing problems with their cooling units. Cook-Tinnin says if necessary, students will be moved to another location within the school with working air conditioning.
If the temperature reaches above 90 degrees, students will not go outdoors for recess.
As for transportation to and from school, OKCPS buses do not have air conditioning. Cook-Tinnin says bus drivers have received training on how to spot heat exhaustion, and each bus will carry several bottles of water in case students become overheated.
This is the first year OKCPS is using the continuous calendar. Under the new schedule:
