OKLAHOMA CITY -- The summer is dwindling away and some parents are already started to think of the school year ahead. But even with all of those back to school sales, some families struggle to get their kids the things they need to succeed.

"I would not be able to provide it at all," said Angel Earls, a single mother of three. "It's hard enough to provide diapers and hygiene products as it is, let alone trying to get all the supplies for her to go to school. Now, I've got two of them going to school."

Earls currently lives at the City Rescue Mission in downtown Oklahoma City. She is taking classes there and hopes to one day get a home of her own and be able to provide for her children. And her children aren't alone. Around 30 other kids living at the mission also need school supplies.

To help with the need, the mission has kicked off a school supply drive to help families like the Earls. Blessings that Angel said will make a difference for her kids when they start school.

"They won't have to worry about telling the teacher my mom can't afford it or my dad can't afford it because with the drive they'll be able to have the things that they need and they can focus on school instead of focusing on what they don't have," Earls said.

School supplies that are needed include: child scissors, glue sticks, rulers and protractors, thesaurus, pocket folders with brads, markers, No. 2 pencils, pencil boxes, highlighters, blue and black pens, spiral notebooks, dictionaries, Elmer's glue, backpacks, three ring binders, colored pencils, wide ruled notebook paper, red pens, pencil sharpeners, Kleenex.

Other items needed include: $25 gift cards to Wal-Mart, skirts and dresses (no iron), shorts, sweaters, pants, jeans, boys shirts (no iron), underwear, T-shirts, winter coats, girls tops (no iron), umbrellas, jackets, gloves and scarves, hair brushes and hair ties, socks and shoes.

These items can be dropped off at City Rescue Mission, 800 W. California Ave., between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
