TULSA, Oklahoma -- After weeks without seeing a drop of rain anywhere in Tulsa county, the skies opened just enough to glaze the Meadowbrook Country Club fairways with a little mid-afternoon drizzle.

Rain or not, nothing could keep University of Tulsa golfer Stephen Carney from advancing in the 2011 Oklahoma Golf Association State Amateur Championship.

"I was lucky to finish up before it started raining," Carney said. "I just look forward to tomorrow."

Carney, the reigning tournament champ, defeated Jordan Perceful 4 & 3 in the afternoon pairings. Carney beat Brodie Hinkle 5 & 4 in the morning round.

"I'm very confident," he said. "I got invited to the Southern Amateur and I had to turn it that down because it's the same time as this one. I really look forward to this."

Oral Roberts golfer Bryan Boaz beat Chickasha's Taylor Williams in the Round of 64 Tuesday morning and took out Northeastern State golfer Preston Wilkins 4 & 3. Boaz is one of seven Meadowbrook members participating in the four-day event.

"We're all rooting for each other," Boaz said. "It'd mean a lot (to win). This is my home golf course."

Carney said he agrees.

"Right here on my home course that I play every day, I feel like I have the game to win," he said after winning his second match of the day. "I can get a little more of an advantage."

Carney will face Norman's Cole Wiederkehr in the Round of 16 Wednesday at 8 a.m. The winner advances to face the winner of Boaz and Tate Williamson's match in Thursday's semifinals.

This year's OGA State Amateur is open to golfers from across the state and features players from ages 15 to 56.

"I've seen some fantastic golf shots. There are a lot of great players out here," said Meadowbrook PGA Professional Bobby Haddon. "If you have a chance, come out the next couple of days and watch the excitement."

The tournament is open to the public. The championship pairing will face off on Thursday afternoon.
