Hazardous Material Spill Closes Highway Near Woodward

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol closed a section of US 270 between Woodward and Fort Supply in northwestern Oklahoma Thursday evening.

WOODWARD, Oklahoma -- The Oklahoma Department of Transportation closed a section of US 270 between Woodward and Fort Supply in northwestern Oklahoma Thursday evening.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported a 40,000-lb. hazardous material spill on the highway approximately seven miles northwest of Woodward.

Southbound lanes and one northbound lane were reopened about 10 p.m.

The material was identified as mercaptin, a chemical which is used to put the odor in natural gas.

The Woodward Fire Department and the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality are on the scene. 

A hazardous materials team is enroute from Guthrie.

No evacuations have been made.
