OKLAHOMA CITY -- A sobriety checkpoint plus extra patrols netted the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office 16 arrests and 134 citations overnight Saturday and Sunday.

The checkpoint was at the 300 block of North MacArthur in Oklahoma City over the 4th of July weekend.

"This checkpoint saved lives," said Sheriff John Whetsel.

"There were a total of 11 alcohol or drug related arrests. Getting people from behind the wheel who cannot walk - much less drive - protects innocent bystanders from the horrible decisions people make to drive after a night of drinking."

Whetsel said the OCSO tries to hold at least one sobriety checkpoint per month, scheduled so he can attend and supervise.

The results of the check point that ran from 10:30 p.m. Saturday to 3 a.m. Sunday:

Arrests:

  • 11 for driving under the influence/actual physical control
  • 2 for driving under suspension or revocation (no driver's license)
  • 3 for other offenses

Citations:

  • 34 for failure to carry insurance
  • 29 for other offenses
  • 25 for suspended or revoked license
  • 20 for child restraint violations
  • 13 for driver's license restriction violations
  • 5 for not wearing seat belts
  • 4 for expired tags
  • 3 for unsafe lane change
  • 1 for speeding

Deputies also issued 24 warnings.
