ALEX, Oklahoma -- A group of teenagers trying to raise money for their school may end up having to actually shell out hundreds of dollars.

The teenagers said they were trying to help raise money for their local school, but instead ended up with more than $500 in fines. They said they didn't know they were breaking the law.

Cash Bray goes noodling with his brother every summer.

"It'll get your blood flowing, really," Bray said. "It's pretty nervous. You stick your hand in the hole and when the fish bites you, it's pretty scary. I like it. It's a nice, fun sport."

Pursuing that sport last weekend led to a big misunderstanding. Bray and his brother were noodling in the Washita River in Grady County for a tournament to benefit Alex Public Schools.

"We were just out there trying to have a good time and hopefully catch something, win first, second prize, but we didn't," Bray said.

Instead, the brothers from Alex ended up landing a couple of citations that could cost them nearly $500.

They were cited for fishing without the consent of the landowner and noodling with a hook.

Bray said he saw a "No Trespassing" sign on one side of a bridge where he and his brother intended to fish, so he parked on the other side of the bridge where there was no sign.

"We didn't know we were trespassing," he said.

The pair was issued tickets by a game warden.

The landowner said he would have allowed the teens to fish if only they had asked permission first. His family has had problems with trespassers in the past breaking farm equipment and leaving trash.

"It was an honest mistake," Bray said. "If anybody would have shown up there and they'd seen the sign and they would have parked on the other side and do the same thing we did."

The brothers said they plan on fighting the tickets in court later this month.
