Cleveland County Man Cited For Burn Ban Violation

NORMAN, Oklahoma -- At the urging of most of the fire chiefs in the county, the Cleveland County Commissioners imposed a new burn ban last Monday. The Norman Fire Department has already cited one man for violating it.

But with the Fourth of July approaching, the Commissioners modified the earlier ban to allow outdoor charcoal grilling since many people will be at lakes and outdoor barbeques.

As for fireworks, the Commissioners imposed a ban on the discharge of fireworks in the unincorporated areas of the county.

Gil Lenker, who sells fireworks just beyond Norman's city limits, thinks the Commissioners should reconsider their action.

"You know, we've had rain the last two mornings," Lenker said."That has changed things significantly since they imposed the burn ban."

Tomorrow the Commissioners will revisit the discharge ban. One Commissioner is leaning toward lifting it, along with a ban on outdoor welding.

The private discharge of fireworks is still banned in the city of Norman, even though a new state law allows the sale of fireworks in city retail stores.
