Edmond Animal Shelter Overflowing

EDMOND, Oklahoma -- Animal shelters across the state all face the same problem in the summer: they're overflowing with dogs and cats which need homes.

"We're at more than capacity and so we don't have room for any more animals, but we still have to take them in," Captain Nicki Smith of the Edmond Animal Welfare Department said.

The Edmond animal shelter has room for about 25 dogs, but right now they're taking care of about 50 and they have more than 30 cats or kittens and they say more are still coming in.

"We probably get a lot of strays because of the storms knocking over fences, animas becoming frightened, running away," Smith said.

She said area animal shelters should be an owner's first call if their pet goes missing

"Some of them have collars. Some of them are purebreds. If they don't have a tag or a microchip, we have no way of locating them [the owners] unless they call," she said.

But, Smith said, strays from the storms aren't the only reason the shelter is full in the summer.

"People are going on vacation and that kind of thing. And the shelter is always full."

Fortunately, Smith said, summer is the perfect time to add to your family.

"It would be a great time to adopt because all the kids are at home. They get time to get to know the animal, get real bonded before the school year starts."

Smith said it is a simple process to adopt at the Edmond shelter and you can make sure the animal you've picked is a good fit for your home.

"People can take the animals in and, to kind of get acquainted, they can also bring their own pets they already have up here to see if they're compatible with the animal they are interested in."

All of the animals up for adoption have had their shots and have been spayed or neutered. There is a $25 adoption fee.
