DEWEY COUNTY, Oklahoma -- Two drivers racing each other while under the influence of alcohol caused an injury wreck in Dewey County, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

The collision took place at about 5:10 p.m. on State Highway 34 just south of Camargo in Dewey County.

Troopers say 45-year-old Terry Smith of Leedy was racing 40-year-old Rodney Rohde of Camargo when the two vehicles collided. Smith's 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix left the roadway to the left in a broad slide while Rohde's 2000 Volkswagen Beetle left the roadway to the right.

Smith was treated and released for his injuries at an Elk City hospital. His passenger, 59-year-old Dena Smith of Camargo was treated and released for a head injury.

Rohde was taken by medical helicopter to an Oklahoma City hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

Both drivers were impaired by drinking, according to Trooper Paul Staggs.

No one was wearing a seat belt, the trooper's report states.
