OKLAHOMA CITY – EMSA paramedics responded to numerous heat-related calls Saturday and they said with triple digit temperatures they're expecting more calls and they just want to send some friendly reminders on how to beat the heat.

In Bricktown, the blues are blaring, the mercury is rising and staying in the shade is one hot commodity.

"Hot! I'm from Nebraska. It's cooler there and hotter here," said Nancy Braswell. She and her granddaughters are a few of the folks keeping cool in every way possible.

"We're wearing our hats, we're wearing our sunglasses, dresses, and flip flops, and being as cool as we can," Braswell said.

Sun-kissed benches and chairs may have been empty, but some didn't mind braving the steamy temperatures.

"It's pretty hot, but I can handle it," said Buddy Jones who was taking a break in the sun after his daily jog.

"I'm having a hard time getting enough water. It's already boiling, but, normally, if you drink 16 ounces every hour, then you'll be all right," he said.

At EMSA headquarters, paramedics packed on the ice to stay cool.

"The potential for more people being outside or being affected by the heat is there," said Mike Roy with EMSA.

On Friday, EMSA crews responded to eight calls in 24 hours.

"This is the weekend, so we're going to have more people outside, playing outside in the sun whether it be at sporting events, the lake, or working in the backyard," Roy said.

Meanwhile, back at the blues festival, Jones was taking the heat in stride.

"I told the Lord when I got back to where it was warm I wouldn't gripe about the weather anymore," he said.

EMSA paramedics advised there are several ways to beat the heat: Drink lots of water. Caffeine and alcoholic drinks will tend to make one more dehydrated. Wear light colored, loose fitting clothing. And, pay attention not only to your own body, but also to those near you, especially the elderly and children.
