OKLAHOMA CITY -- Thieves nearly ruined a softball tournament in Oklahoma City when they made off with all of a team's equipment.

The team of 11 and 12-year-old girls from Middletown, Ohio, came to Oklahoma City over the weekend to compete in the ASA National Qualifiers Girls Softball Tournament. But the Ohio Hawks Fastpitch Softball team was almost benched because someone stole a U-Haul trailer filled with their equipment. It was taken from the parking lot of the hotel in which they were staying.

Fortunately, some generous Oklahomans stepped up to the plate and donated much needed equipment, ensuring the girls were able to compete. Coach Doug Lenos also credited the generosity of Karen Weisman, a local representative of Easton, a baseball and softball equipment company. Easton donated six bats, a couple of gloves, batting gloves and close to $2,000 worth of equipment. The team also received cleats and bat bags, which were sent overnight from Ringor, a company specializing in fastpitch softball gear.

"The people that came through were incredible!" Jason Fisher, a father of one of the girls, said.

But the story only gets better.

Oklahoma City police were able to track down the stolen trailer and most of the stolen equipment. Surveillance video at the hotel revealed a person who was familiar to police. Officers also received a call from a concerned citizen that led them to a vacant rent house in southwest Oklahoma City, where most of the equipment was recovered.

So far, police have arrested one person for the theft, 36-year-old Stewart Wyatt Greene. He was booked into the Oklahoma County jail. He was already wanted on an outstanding armed robbery warrant. Police say they are still investigating and could make more arrests.
