OKLAHOMA CITY -- When summertime temperatures hit the upper nineties and above, there always seem to be outdoor workers who not only survive, but thrive in the summer sun.  Could it be that some people are actually immune to the heat?

Preparing for the onslaught of heat related emergencies is a summertime ritual for EMSA Operations Supervisor Mike Roy.

"We want to make sure our crews are prepared when they go out."  Roy said.  "So they can take care of the people when the time comes."

When it comes to outdoor workers, Roy doesn't think that they're actually used to the heat.

"I don't think there's really any way to acclimate yourself," said Roy.  "It's more of a deal of getting yourself prepared."

Roy emphasized that hydration is key when preparing for the Oklahoma heat.  Drinking plenty of fluids before, during, and after outdoor activities is really the only way to beat the heat.

Of course, running through a sprayground is not a bad idea.

Rose Brown, visiting one of Oklahoma City's mini-water parks with her grandson, monitors their time in the sun.

"I try to stay out of the sun," Brown said.  "I let him get in the sun a little while but I try to limit his time."

Like Brown, Roy said that limiting one's own time in the sun is essential for staying safe this summer.

"The big thing is just hydrating and finding a cool place ever so often and getting yourself out of the environment when you know you need to," he said.
