NORMAN, Oklahoma -- "In God We Trust" is the official U.S. motto. It appears on our national currency; and now Cleveland County Commissioners want it on display in county buildings.

"I'm for it. I think it's fine," Norman resident Laquita Kimes said.

The Commissioners want an opinion from the Attorney General's office first to make sure the posting of the motto doesn't violate court rulings on church and state.

Norman attorney Michael Salem filed the lawsuit that forced the city of Edmond to remove a cross from its city seal. He says legal attempts to remove the motto from currency have failed, but displaying the motto in public buildings raises a new issue.

"I'm not saying that there's not a way the motto could not be displayed in a constitutional fashion," said Salem. "I'm just saying this is an amazing thicket."
