STILLWATER, Okla. – The Oklahoma State men's golf team finished the first day of the NCAA Championships with a cumulative score of 292 to finish in eighth place.

The Cowboys' best two performances of the day came from freshman Talor Gooch and sophomore Sean Einhaus, who both finished tied for 19th place with an opening-round 72. Team top seed Peter Uihlein started with bogeys on two of his first four holes, but recovered to shoot a 73.

The team's second and third seeds – Kevin Tway and Morgan Hoffman, respectively – had more problems. Hoffman shot a 75 and finished tied for 64th, while Tway shot a 77 and tied for 90th.

"It wasn't, obviously, the round we wanted to play," head coach Mike McGraw said. "The golf course was the most getable you're going to see it, and I don't care how much rough there is, there was no wind."

McGraw noted that one of the benefits of having a bad day in the opening round is that his team will have time to turn things around.

"Tomorrow's a quick turnaround. We are going to be out here at 7 a.m. and those greens are going to be perfect, and you're not going to be waiting on the group in front of you," McGraw said. "You just play nine holes without any stress, so if you can go out there and get a good number posted tomorrow morning, you'll be fine."

Georgia Tech had both the best individual and team score. The Yellowjackets shot a total of 283 and finished three shots ahead of UCLA. Tech's James White shot a 5-under 67 and led Texas A&M's Cameron Peck by one strike.

"I think it's just one of those days where the ball might not have been bouncing our way," Uihlein said. "I'm not too worried. I know (Morgan) Hoffmann and Kevin (Tway) will play better. Sean (Einhaus) and Taylor (Gooch) played well today and they'll definitely keep it up."

OSU will continue action at 7 a.m. Wednesday and will be grouped with UCLA and Alabama, which currently sit in second and third place, respectively.
