EDMOND, Oklahoma -- With the same high-tech equipment they use to solve crimes, University of Central Oklahoma Forensic Science Institute (FSI) faculty and students hope to help victims of the May 24 tornadoes reclaim a part of their lives through free data recovery assistance.

"Many people in the affected areas have likely lost computers or have damaged hard drives or other media with important data on it they would like to recover, like photos or documents," said Mark McCoy, Ph.D., associate professor at the FSI.

"It could cost hundreds of dollars to hire a company to recover the data. This is an opportunity for us to use our resources to help our fellow Oklahomans in their time of need."

Those who would like to take advantage of the FSI's offer should contact the institute at (405) 974-6911 to be placed on a sign up list. After June 15, representatives from the FSI will contact those on the list to arrange for them to bring their materials to the institute.

Those contacted will also be required to sign a release of liability, as there are no guarantees data can be recovered, and will need to provide legal identification that shows the materials on the hard drive or computer belong to the person requesting data recovery.

McCoy added that those who find computers or other media that do not belong to them among the tornado damage are encouraged to contact the FSI, too, as they may be able to identify the owner of the computer.
