LAKE THUNDERBIRD, Oklahoma -- Last year a tornado hit Lake Thunderbird three weeks before the Memorial Day weekend. That meant many of you couldn't go to the lake northeast of Norman.

But with a new $3 million marina, things are looking up and boaters are out in force.

The water was okay for swimming and splashing--but too choppy, too rough for large boats.

"we were going to ride out into the lake with the grandkids. The kids were all going to show up but it's so windy we didn't want to go out. It's rough," said boat owner Cheri Hankins.

Some small craft ventured out. Still, it was a better Memorial Day weekend than last year.

"Everybody's happy. I mean we haven't Any really problems. Nothing out of the norm," said Park Ranger Mike Dickerson.

Members of the Door Christian Fellowship found the conditions at the lake just perfect for an ancient rite.

"we actually believe in water baptism. So we come out to the lake and we baptize in the water here," said Larry Jalomo of the Door Christian Fellowship.

The Lake Thunderbird waters are murky and cold. They chill the body but not the soul.

It's estimated that at least 10,000 more people visited the lake this year than last year.
