Piedmont Church Offers Tornado Victims Free Laundry Service

PIEDMONT, Oklahoma -- Many victims of the May 24 tornado outbreak survived with only the clothes on their backs. Now a church in Piedmont is offering to clean those clothes for free.

Freedom Church of Piedmont is providing free laundry services for Piedmont tornado victims. People can bring clothing to the church and volunteers will take them home or to laundry mats to be cleaned. Clothes that require dry cleaning will be taken to local dry cleaners.

Freedom Church originally contacted Tide Loads of Hope to ask the laundry detergent company to bring its massive truck filled with washers and dryers to Oklahoma. Unfortunately, Tide Loads of Hope is helping the many tornado victims in Joplin, Missouri, and the truck will be stationed there for several weeks.

Freedom Church has converted its youth center at 100 N.W. Monroe into a laundry drop-off center. Anyone dropping off laundry must make sure clothing does not contain any items that could damage washing machines.

The laundry service will open Saturday, May 28, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Starting Monday, May 30, the center will be open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. for drop off, and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. for pick up.

Freedom Church is asking people to volunteer their time, or donate laundry detergent, fabric softener and dryer sheets. The church also needs money to help pay for the use of laundry mat machines.
