No Double-Digit Tuition Hike For University of Oklahoma

NORMAN, Oklahoma -- University of Oklahoma President David Boren says students will see a tuition increase next year but it will stay in the single digits.

State lawmakers have agreed to a budget that cuts funding to the state's colleges and universities by 5 percent. Universities had been lobbying for a 6 percent increase in funding.

Boren said Thursday he hopes to keep tuition hikes to the low-single digits but won't know for sure until the Legislature decides about supplemental funding.

He says OU's Norman campus and Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City have had to absorb $100 million in cuts and uncovered costs the past three years.

Tuition at OU increased by 4.5 percent last year. There was no tuition increase the year before, thanks to reserve funds.
