OKLAHOMA CITY -- An Oklahoma City police officer who was shot by a suspect hiding in a trash can will receive the Medal of Honor for his bravery.

Sgt. Mike Davis has been a police officer for 16 years. On April 24, 2010, Davis, his partner and other police officers were searching a neighborhood near N.E. 17th Street and Lincoln. They were looking for a suspect involved in a high-speed police chase. The man had crashed his pickup truck in the neighborhood then jumped out and ran.

Davis and his partner were searching door to door when Davis spotted a trash can. Figuring it could be a good hiding place for the suspect, Davis lifted the lid. That's when the suspect opened fire.

"I initially felt a sharp pain to my left side and knew immediately what had happened," Davis said.

The suspect had shot Davis, but fortunately, he was wearing a bullet proof vest.

"The vest did save my life. The bullet did not penetrate and it actually hit the very bottom edge of the vest."

A year after the shooting, Davis has fully recovered and is back on the job. Friday, May 6, Davis will receive the Medal of Honor, the highest award that can be bestowed upon an Oklahoma City police officer.

"I don't think I did anything special. This award is obviously, it's an honor to get it and it's very humbling, but at the same time I didn't do anything spectacular. I reacted exactly like I was trained and for that training I was able to survive this."

Davis says he tries to teach younger police officers the importance of training because it saved his life.

Davis will be receiving the Medal of Honor at the Oklahoma City Police Department police banquet this Friday. He will be joining two other medal of honor recipients, Officer Katie Lawson and Officer Chad Peery.
