OKLAHOMA CITY -- A former NBA star and a group of volunteers teamed up Saturday to make an Oklahoma City's family's dream of owning a home come true.

Former NBA star Desmond Mason was one of the dozens of volunteers helping raise the walls of the Habitat for Humanity home.

"It feels good to be able to give back," said Desmond Mason.

The OSU alumni said he's happy to be back in the Sooner State.

"Oklahoma has really embraced us, so to be able to give back in a small way for a family is a big thing," Mason said.

Single mother Jasmine Sherrod works two jobs. She and her two young children will soon be able to call the home their own and she's been working hard, clocking 300 hours of sweat equity.

"I'm very excited, blessed to be at this point in my life," Sherrod said. "I feel like I've accomplished a lot going through this process so I'm excited."

Owning her very first home is a dream come true, but having a former NBA player putting in the pieces is one housewarming present she'll never forget.

"You never expect an NBA, or ex-NBA or anybody with a higher up rank to actually come out and do community work," Sherrod said. "He's really nice. He's down to earth, just like an average person like anybody else."

Since more than 100 volunteers helped out Saturday, it took less than two hours to put up all of the walls. The dedication is scheduled for the end of June and Sherrod is ready to settle in and call it home.

"Just a new beginning, just a more comfortable sense of knowing that I'm actually owning something," Sherrod said.

The home is located in the Hope Crossing community in northeast Oklahoma City. A total of 217 Habitat homes will be built in the area.
