SLAUGHTERVILLE, Oklahoma -- An Oklahoma National Guard helicopter helped firefighters on the ground battle a large wildfire in central Oklahoma in Cleveland County.

Cleveland County Emergency Management Director Dan Cary said multiple fire departments from Cleveland and McClain counties were working to put out the blaze near Slaughterville. Lt. Col. Max Moss of the Oklahoma National Guard said the CH47 Chinook helicopter with a 1,320-gallon bucket dumped water on the Slaughterville fire throughout the afternoon.

About 50 percent of the wildfire had been contained by late Wednesday afternoon. Cary said there were no reports of injuries.

One unoccupied structure was destroyed by the fire, but firefighters said they were unsure if it was an outbuilding or a house.

Sheriff's deputies had urged people to leave their homes in the area as a precaution.

The fire has burned approximately six square miles in an area between Maquire and Banner Roads, from 120th S.E. to 156th S.E.

Winds were gusting to about 30 mph in the area. SkyNews 9 HD pilot Mason Dunn said the flames were jumping about 50 yards at one time.

The Cleveland County Emergency Manager asked the American Red Cross to respond to the fires. They are providing a canteen for the firefighters battling the wildfire.

Cleveland County is listed under a burn ban.

Oklahoma has been plagued by wildfires throughout February and March. Dozens of homes have been destroyed, including two in the Oklahoma Panhandle on Tuesday.
