Edmond Man Shoots, Kills Ex-Wife, Then Himself

OKLAHOMA CITY  -- Oklahoma City police have identified the two people shot to death in two vehicles in an apparent murder-suicide Tuesday evening in the 1100 block of N.W. 26th Street.

Neighbors reported hearing at least 10 gunshots around 6 p.m. When police arrived, they found two vehicles in a parking lot, each with a body on the driver's side.

Investigators believe Edmond attorney 58-year-old Freda Jane Cross arrived at the parking lot to meet her ex-husband, 61-year-old Michael James McCreary. The couple divorced in January, 2011, after nearly 10 years of marriage. Each remained in their own car while they argued.

Police said McCreary pulled out a gun after a few minutes and shot Cross to death. He then turned the gun on himself. Police said no one else was involved in the shooting.

"She was a wonderful person. It's a huge loss, and it's a horrible sin for Mike to have done this to her and to the rest of us," said Becky Tallent, Cross' longtime friend and former colleague.

Friends say McCreary had been spiraling out of control ever since he started drinking again back in November.

Cross filed a protective order against McCreary on Feb. 24.

Cross' attorney Matt Buergler, who also worked alongside her for several years, said, "We are deeply saddened about the tragic loss of our friend and colleague. She was a first class attorney. She brought honor to the court. We will miss her and we extend our heartfelt condolences to her family."
