OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma City Community College is hoping high school and college students will shine.

They launched the SHINE program Tuesday, which stands for Start Helping Impacted Neighborhoods Now. The new program encourages high school and college students to take part in community service.

According to the college, studies show students involved in community service programs are less likely to drop out, do better in school and are more likely to complete college.

"They learn how to meet schedules, how to work together as a group towards the successful outcome of a project," said State Superintendent Janet Barresi.

Students who complete 100 hours of community service through this program will receive a special certificate and a cord they can wear on their graduation gowns.
