OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner John Doak is urging people across the state to prepare for the start of severe weather season and an increased risk of damage to property from wind, rain, hail, floods and tornadoes.

"Records show that two-thirds of Oklahoma's tornadoes occur from March to May," said Doak. "While tornadoes may have the highest potential for significant widespread damage, the high winds, heavy rains and flooding that often accompanies spring storms can cause great damage to personal and business property."

Doak said Oklahomans should check their insurance policies and ask these three questions:

  • What type of coverage do I have?
  • How much coverage do I need?
  • What are my discounts and deductibles?

Doak also reminded Oklahomans to take steps to protect their personal safety during the storm season. The Oklahoma Office of Emergency Management offers weather safety checklists on its website.
