ROGERS COUNTY -- A Rogers County man is in jail after deputies discovered about 30 dogs living in and around a house north of Claremore.

Deputies say the conditions are deplorable, with trash and feces piled up in every room. The neighbors say it's become a health hazard.

The man estimates there were 10 to 13 dogs inside the house. He had shoveled some of the feces into piles to create a walkway.

There were probably another 10 living under the house that neighbors say run wild.  And, there were six dogs in another pen, all squeezed inside a washing machine tub.

"Tomorrow is going to be better," Annette King Tucker, Wild Heart Rescue, said.

The neighbors say the dogs were chasing people, attacked one child and one pet, plus the trash and the filth created a serious health hazard.

"I think the house needs to be cleaned, then closed and burned, torn down, leveled, leveled and burned, you don't know the contamination in there," one neighbor said.

Animal rescue volunteers, Claremore Animal control and deputies suited up before going inside. Corralling the snarling, snapping, scared dogs was hard work.

Each dog was put into a crate and taken to a vet, then foster homes and adoptive homes will be needed.

"I don't know how anything alive could survive in conditions like that. It's disturbing," Tucker said.

Deputies arrested Dennis Brooks, 60, for animal cruelty. They say he admitted the conditions weren't good, but said he didn't know what to do. The sheriff says animal control in the county is desperately needed.

"It almost gets to be we're checking on more animals than we are humans sometimes," Sheriff Scott Walton said.

Walton said as many as 32 dogs were found in and around the residence.

Donations are needed for the kennel that's housing some of the dogs at a discount.

Foster homes are needed to take the dogs short term, then they'll be looking for people to adopt them.

You can find pictures of the dogs on the Facebook page for Wild Heart Rescue Ranch.  Just go to Facebook.com and search for Wild Heart Rescue Ranch. Call them, not the sheriff's office, to donate or help with these dogs.
