OKLAHOMA CITY -- High schools students from across the country filled the Cox Convention Center Friday for the Oklahoma FIRST robotic competition.

The top seven teams will go on to compete at the national championship in Saint Louis.

Students say the robotics competition gives them a chance to jumpstart their future.

"High schoolers, from what we've heard, they went on to work at McDonalds and they actually had to work their way up to get into college…to businesses, but this gets them sort of a kick start," said competition participant Tyler Cawley.

For the competition, the students have six weeks to build the remote controlled robots with similar parts. Each team works with engineers who mentor the students on their design. The robots then compete in various tasks.

The competition runs through Saturday. Learn more about the FIRST competitions.
