The '50-50 Rule' Program Helps Siblings Share Care Giving Load

TULSA, Oklahoma -- A Tulsa home healthcare provider for seniors has launched a program to help siblings provide the best caring for aging parents while helping each other share the workload.

The "50-50 Rule" program, sponsored by Home Instead Senior Care, is designed to avoid family conflict as brothers and sisters share the workload as their parents age and needed assistance.

The downloadable guide covers care giving topics such as dividing the workload, building teamwork and working through disagreements over money, medical care and end-of-life issues such as estate planning.

The "50-50 Rule" refers to the average age when siblings are caring for their parents – age 50, as well as the need to share in the plans for care (50/50).

The stakes are high with family relationships and quality of life at risk. Sharing isn't always easy being brothers and sisters who grew up under the same roof.

In 43 percent of U.S. families, one sibling has the responsibility for providing most or all of the care for their parents. Many times, the unwillingness for one or more siblings to help leads to deteriorating relationships.
