PERRY, Oklahoma -- Police officers said they were forced to shoot a man in a Walmart parking lot.
A clerk at Sunmark Travel Plaza called Perry police Tuesday morning to report a man had stolen some items and walked out of the store. The clerk gave police a description of the man and the truck he was driving.
Officers spotted the truck on Fur Avenue and pursued the driver until he pulled into a Walmart parking lot. Police said when the man stepped out of the truck, he entered a gun stance and had something in his hand. Police said the two Perry officers feared for their safety, and fired their guns. The suspect was killed.
It was determined the suspect was only pointing an ice scraper at police and police said he stole an energy drink from that convenience store.
The Perry Police Department and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation are investigating the shooting. The two officers, Sgt. Andrew Dudrey and Officer Matt Smith, have been placed on administrative leave. Dudrey has been with the force since February 2004 and Smith has been an officer since July 2008.
