TULSA, Oklahoma – A man who allegedly stole a Tulsa police cruiser was finally caught near Inola after leading OHP troopers and other agencies on a dangerous high speed chase.

The car was taken when Tulsa police were attempting to serve a felony arrest warrant on 28-year-old Steven Cahill in the area near 51st and Sheridan around 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

Police say Cahill  was able to break free during a scuffle and take off in the cruiser. Police say he then fled at a high rate of speed eastbound on I-44.

"It was followed by a citizen that was monitoring this and calling 911, giving them locations," said Rogers County Sheriff Scott Walton.

OHP soon caught up with Cahill and stopped him at Highway 412 east of Highway 169. Shots were fired and the suspect was hit in the elbow, Walton said.

"One shot was fired from OHP. Obviously knowing weapons were inside the vehicle," he said.

Cahill then jumped back in the Tulsa police cruiser and traveled eastbound in the westbound lanes at a high rate of speed.

OHP was later able to knock the vehicle from the road and disable the driver where he was arrested one mile east of Highway 88 on Highway 412.

"I certainly want to give credit to OHP for the fine work they did out here," Walton said. He said damage to the vehicle was minimal.

Cahill was transported to a Tulsa hospital and later booked into the Tulsa County Jail.

This incident comes almost 24 hours after two Tulsa men were arrested for stealing an EMSA ambulance Friday night.
