EDMOND, Oklahoma -- Edmond police arrested a man they said sped 100 mph down Broadway Extension in an attempt to flee from officers.

Officers tried to pull over 43-year-old William Smiley for an expired tag just before 3:30 a.m. Tuesday near W. 33rd Street and Broadway. Police said Smiley refused to stop and sped southbound onto Broadway Extention.

When Smiley exited at Britton Road, an Edmond police officer performed a maneuver that forced his car to stop. Smiley jumped out and tried to run, but was quickly caught by Edmond and Oklahoma City police officers.

An Edmond Police Department spokesperson said after the arrest, Smiley refused to walk and had to be carried to a police vehicle. The suspect told officers he ran because he thought there was a warrant for his arrest in Oklahoma County. There was no warrant in Oklahoma County, but there was one in Oklahoma City for APC, which means Smiley was accused of being intoxicated in his car but not driving.

Smiley now faces charges of attempting to elude and possession of drug paraphernalia.
