Metro Schools Propose Ways To Make-Up Snow Days

MOORE, Oklahoma -- Area school districts are starting to decide how to make up for all those snow days.

The Moore School Board voted to use the district's three built-in snow days and then add 18 minutes to the end of each day until the end of the year. Secondary schools would lengthen each class period by three minutes.

"What they've proposed is a lot of what we've been hearing from our parents," said Heather Beauchamp a teacher at Northmoor Elementary School.

Although the president of the teacher's union is already looking into issues this could cause with the teacher's contract including hours teachers are supposed to be at school.

"I'm just going to be watching my contract," said Monte Lawler.

She's also concerned about cafeteria workers who now won't be able to make up lost days.

"They didn't lose money, but they did lose a leave day," said Lawler.

Still these are issues almost every district will have to deal with.

The preferred plan coming out of a committee in Edmond includes adding 40 minutes to each day, 20 in the morning, 20 in the evening for 36 days. High school and middle school class periods would each be 10 minutes longer. Elementary schools would dedicate the extra time to reading and math.

Edmond's school board will vote on the plan Thursday night.

Both proposals would mean school would be out by Memorial Day weekend.
