What a wild ride we have had in the state the last 24 hours! Northern Oklahoma has had record snowfall totals and this morning we woke up to the coldest morning ever recorded in Oklahoma.

I spoke with the National Weather Service out of Tulsa and they are reporting that the low in Nowata will more than likely end up being minus-31 degrees. Yes, that is right MINUS- 31!!

This breaks the long standing record of coldest low temperature for the state of minus 27 degrees. This low was previously set in 1930 near the town of Watts and before that, set in 1905 set near the town of Vinita. Both of these locations are in the far northeast part of the state.

Ponca City came close this morning as well, having a record low of minus 25 degrees. I also have an unconfirmed report from a viewer in Lamont of negative 30! To put this in perspective, no observing sites in Alaska were colder than these numbers! The coldest I have seen is about negative 18 degrees near the Arctic Circle….Very impressive and VERY cold!!

Tulsa also set an all time record snowfall for the season yesterday. The total snowfall for the season now is at 26.6 inches. The previous record was 25.6 inches set in the 1923-1924 season.

Oklahoma City is getting closer to its seasonal snowfall record. Yesterday, OKC had 5.9 inches of snow officially. This puts our total at 19.6 inches. The record seasonal snowfall is 25.2 set back in 1947-1948. We came close last year with a whopping 19.9. In a typical season we see about 9 inches of snowfall.

We are still looking forward to a big warm up starting this weekend. By next week, this arctic weather will be a distant memory as we are enjoying a prelude to spring!
