Street Crews Ready To Keep Oklahoma City Streets Clear

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma City street crews are on 12-hour shifts, ready to keep metro area roads clear when a severe winter storm hits the city.

Crews checked into work at noon Monday to get their salt trucks ready. They pretreated bridges over the weekend. Street superintendent Mike DiGiacomo said they have 25 salt trucks, 18 snow plows, and several contractors on standby to handle the downtown area.

"A lot of what we do is going to be dependent upon what kind of weather comes in. We'll be ready for whatever's there," DiGiacomo said.

DiGiacomo's crews will concentrate their efforts on city snow routes. He urged drivers to use those routes if they have to drive Tuesday. He said if drivers do find themselves stuck, they need to do everything they can to move their vehicles off the road.

"I've got a lot of heavy equipment. We've got a lot of vehicles that are going to try to get from one place to another. And so to have an abandoned vehicle within the roadway is going to be a real problem for us," DiGiacomo said.

Mayor Mick Cornett said the city is hoping for the best and preparing for the worst. He says city offices will be closed tomorrow and he urged local businesses to consider doing the same to keep drivers off the roads.
