Midwest City, Oklahoma -- The owner of a Midwest City auto shop said he's offering up his services this weekend to those who need it but can't afford it.

Joseph Simon bought a car after making the move to Oklahoma. He's a member of the military and is based at Tinker but his new care was a trip down trouble lane.

"It didn't turn out as well as I had hoped it," Simon said.

The engine on Simon's car gave out, so he took it to the Shade Tree Do It Yourself Garage where he's getting help from the shop's owner, Jason Peters.

Peters has had the do-it-yourself garage for a year now, and for the shop's one-year anniversary, Peters is doing something almost unheard of. He's going to work this weekend for free.

"Free shop time, free tools, free advice, free labor if you can't physically do it," Peters said.

However, there is a catch. The free service is only for those who receive some sort of public assistance such as food stamp or for anyone with a deployed military spouse.

"Those are the only requirements I ask. Come in here and we'll give you whatever we can for free and whatever has to be paid for out of pocket will be at 25 percent below my normal costs," Peters said.

Peters, whose wife is a member of the military, is a family man who grew up poor, so he said he knows first-hand the choices some families have to make.

"Do we eat or do we pay rent or do we fix the vehicle to get to work so we can continue to pay rent? It's a tough choice and my heart goes out to people in that situation, and I'm trying to do what I can and hopefully this will lighten that burden," Peters said.

The shop is already getting discounted parts from Advanced Auto Supplies, but they're still asking for others to pitch in with donations. They're also asking for any experienced mechanics who are willing to donate their time this weekend to give them a call.

Anyone who wants to take advantage of this weekend's free services at the Shade Tree Do It Yourself Garage needs to call to set up an appointment at 405-455-6912.
