'Birthdays Made With Love' For Oklahoma City's Foster Children

OKLAHOMA CITY -- A baking class has turned into a cause that is changing dozens of children's lives in Oklahoma City, and the need is only growing.

Wendi Boswell teaches a baking class in Oklahoma City and over time, she and her students have made more cakes than they could ever eat. That's when Birthdays Made with Love was born.

Boswell said she got the idea of Birthdays Made with Love from a Georgia woman who baked a cake for her foster daughter. The girl broke into tears because it was her first her first birthday cake.

In Oklahoma there are more than 11,000 foster children. Boswell and her volunteers are hoping to make their day special.

"There are little kids out there that just need a little bit, just something simple that you would never think of to show that people do care," Boswell said.

A lot of time goes into every personalized present. Rick Parker is one of the volunteers and said baking and decorating cakes are his gifts.

"Most fun is that somebody is going to be able to use it. I deal with a lot of sculpting and stuff and how many sculptures do you need at your house. But with a cake, it's going to be great cause and somebody is going to be able to use it and enjoy it," Parker said.

The volunteers started in October and since then, they have baked 120 cakes for foster children in Oklahoma City.

"Just so Oklahoma children will not go without something just as small as a birthday cake because a lot of people take that for granted and there are a lot of kids out there that don't get it," Boswell said.

But to the volunteers, it's more than just a cake.

"To me it's showing that little bit that people do care about one another, and if we reach out to these children, even if they are in bad situations, they could grow up and reach out to people in good ways," Boswell said.

With more requests coming in for cakes, the organization needs help with supplies and donations.
