TULSA, Oklahoma -- If you rent a vehicle from Dollar Thrifty in the U.S. you will not be able to smoke inside the vehicle.

As of January 1, 2011, every Dollar Thrifty vehicle is smoke-free.

The move is part of the Tulsa-based company's new policy prohibiting smoking by renters at all U.S. corporate stores and participating franchise locations.

According to a news release from Dollar Thrifty, renters who return vehicles after smoking may face a charge of up to $250 for cleaning.

"We're extremely pleased to now offer a 100 per cent smoke-free fleet," said Scott Thompson, president and CEO of Dollar Thrifty. "We are passionate about providing our value-oriented customers with a rental experience that is consistent with our high standards, and we think that fresh, clean and smoke-free car interiors are essential to achieving our objectives."

The news release says all rental vehicles in the Dollar and Thrifty fleets will display stickers notifying renters of the potential charge for noncompliance.
